After the 1980 season, the Detroit Express relocated to Washington, D.C. and became the new Washington Diplomats. Longtime "Dips" player Paul Cannell was purchased from the Calgary Boomers (formerly the Memphis Rogues) and made his return to D.C. and the Diplomats.
